1991: the Cold War is ending. Just days before the US President is to visit China for trade talks, a CIA operative named Bishop is captured in a rogue operation at a Chinese prison. He'll be shot in 24 hours unless the President steps in. CIA honchos hunker down at Langley, controlling the damage to the diplomatic mission by hanging Bishop out to dry. Enter Nathan Muir, one day before retirement from the Agency, the man who recruited and trained Bishop. Can he find a way to get the President to free Bishop; if that fails, can he engineer a rescue? He hangs around Langley, telling stories about Bishop, as he gathers intelligence, looks for opportunities, and runs his own spy game.

Now I&#39;m no military intelligence expert, but since when do the CIA need an almost-retired field-operatives help to frame one of their own as a dissident? Especially when the &quot;help&quot; simply consists of a few hes-a-good-guy-really-and-you-lot-are-bad-for-not-wanting-to-save-him tales centred around Vietnam, Germany, Beruit and China?<br/><br/>There&#39;s a good film to be had though, if you do manage to put your sense aside for 2 and a bit hours. The main plot is a little flimsy, but the bulk of the film is made up of the tales of espionage in Vietnam, Germany and Beruit… and there&#39;s some good story there, the Beruit one being particularly involving. There&#39;s also some good character acting from Robert Redford as the almost-retired maverick CIA recruitment officer, as well as some stunning set pieces - esp. in China and Beiruit.<br/><br/>On the whole though this film seems to have been created as a vehicle for Pitt&#39;s chiselled features, and we see little example of the good acting talent we know he has. It is relatively entertaining though if you like slow-paced, well-drawn out political/military thrillers. If that&#39;s your bag, this is right up your alley.
Spy Game is a spy film thriller that stars Robert Redford and Brad Pitt. It was shown in 2001 - the same year the World Trade Center was attacked by terrorists.<br/><br/>The plot involves CIA operative Nathan Muir,played by the multi-talented Redford,is on the brink of retirement.He then finds out that his protégé,Tom Bishop,played excellently by Brad Pitt,has been arrested in for espionage. No stranger to the machinations of the CIA&#39;s top echelon, Muir hones all his skills and irreverent manner in order to find a way to help Bishop. As he embarks on his mission,he recalls how he recruited and trained the young Bishop, at that time a sergeant in Vietnam, their turbulent times together as operatives. The film was masterfully directed by Tony Scott. <br/><br/>This is one of the best films I have ever seen especially for a spy thriller.It works at all levels.The story was suspenseful from beginning to end.It was fast paced and interesting from beginning to end.All major and minor characters were interesting.The film has a lot of intelligence in terms of the story and characters involved.The acting was also exceptional.Aside from Pitt and Redford,it is also worth mentioning that Catherine McCormack,Stephen Dillane,Larry Bryggman and Marianne Jean- Baptiste provided excellent performances as Elizabeth Hadley,Charles Harker,CIA Deputy Director Troy Folger and Muir&#39;s secretary,Gladys with a lot of smarts and craft. Overall,the film simply works at all level for it was not simply a spy thriller but it also provides us an insight on how the CIA works and the insight on an emotional spy.<br/><br/>Highly recommended for movie viewers who desires intelligent action thrillers.It definitely deserves a 10/10 rating.
It's well-plotted, acted with a charismatic flair and right on the zeitgeist.
Muir lies about his number of wives throughout the movie. He refers to agents and assets that served as cover wives, as his wives. He actually has only been married once to a Korean woman. His one wife stayed in Korea while Muir did two tours in South America. It&#39;s presumed that she has died much earlier. Harry Duncan is located in Hong Kong and played by David Hemmings. We seem him at the beginning of the movie calling Muir at home, and at the end of the movie negotiating the power outage in China. Operation Sideshow was run by the CIA to bug the Chinese side of the trade negotiations happening during the present day in the movie. Tran (the Chinese asset who escapes the prison at the beginning of the movie and is seen in a photograph later) is part of Sideshow, and Bishop piggybacks off this operation by convincing him to share prison schematics and rescue Hadley. Bishop was not a part of this operation, but rather was in China to free Hadley from the prison. She is the mother of the movie&#39;s director Tony Scott (and also mother of Ridley Scott).
